How it works

Here's how Currency Calculator works.

Use the converter at the top of the page to find out what your money's worth in any of 32 supported currencies — at the real ECB mid-market rate, with zero markup.

Choose your currencies

Pick a starting currency and a target currency from the dropdowns. Tap the flag chip to browse all 32 ECB-supported currencies.

Enter your amount

Type how much you want to convert in the "Amount" field — or type the target in "Converted to" if you know what you need to receive. Both fields update each other live.

See the live rate

Currency Calculator pulls the real ECB mid-market rate, refreshed daily. No markup, no hidden fees, no ads — just the rate banks see.

How we compare

What banks and apps actually charge.

Currency Calculator is information-only — we don't sell foreign exchange. Here's the typical markup five popular providers add over the mid-market rate, so you can pick the one that suits you.

Provider Markup over mid-market Typical % Cost on 1,000 USD
HSBC Bank ~3.00%
XE Money Transfer Transfer service ~1.50%
Revolut App (off-hours) ~1.00%
Bunq Neobank ~0.70%
Wise Transfer service ~0.50%
Currency Calculator Reference rate 0.00% 0

Markup figures are typical published averages compiled from each provider's own exchange-rate disclosures. Actual rates vary by currency pair, transfer amount, account tier, day of week, and corridor. Banks often quote 2–4% over mid-market for retail customers; weekday in-limit Revolut transfers can be 0%. Always check the live rate before sending.

Common questions

Currency converter FAQs.

What's the exchange rate?

The exchange rate is the price of one currency expressed in another — for example, how many Indian Rupees you get for 1 US Dollar. Currency Calculator shows the mid-market rate, which is the midpoint between the buy and sell prices banks quote each other. It's the "real" rate before any markup is added — what you'd see on Reuters or Bloomberg — sourced here from the European Central Bank via Frankfurter.

Which conversions can I calculate with Currency Calculator?

You can convert between any two of the 32 currencies the European Central Bank publishes daily — USD, EUR, GBP, JPY, CHF, AUD, CAD, NZD, CNY, INR, BRL, MXN, ZAR, SEK, NOK, DKK, PLN, CZK, HUF, RON, BGN, TRY, ILS, KRW, SGD, HKD, MYR, IDR, PHP, THB, and ISK. Pick any pair from the converter at the top of the page.

Why do currency conversion rates differ between providers?

The mid-market rate is the same everywhere, but no consumer-facing provider gives you that rate directly. Banks, transfer services, and currency apps add a markup on top — typically 0.5% to 4% depending on the provider, the currency pair, and the amount. Banks usually charge the most (2–4%); specialist transfer services like Wise and Revolut charge less (0.5–1%). Compare what each one charges in our "What banks and apps actually charge" section above.

How can I convert money with Currency Calculator?

Currency Calculator is an information service, not a money-transfer service — we don't move money for you. Use the converter at the top of the page to see what your amount is worth at the real mid-market rate, then take that number to your bank or transfer provider so you know exactly what to expect. If their quote is much lower than ours, they're charging a heavy markup.

Where do I actually exchange my currency?

You'll need a bank, broker, or transfer service. Popular choices: Wise and Revolut (low markups, app-based), XE Money Transfer (large transfers), and traditional banks like HSBC, Chase, or Barclays (highest markups, but convenient if you already have an account). Compare typical markups in the table above before you send.

Are there any currency exchange limits?

Currency Calculator itself has no limits — you can convert any amount, free, with no signup required. Limits only come into play when you actually move money: each provider sets their own daily, monthly, and lifetime caps, and large transfers may need extra documentation. Check your provider's terms before sending.
